Where is Xena when you need her?

There was a recent online discussion on the blog section of Robust Leather that revolved around the dictates of the fashion industry and its’ guidelines for becoming a model. Naturally Kate Moss’ name was prevalent as she epitomizes the “ideal” upheld by the rag trade – and I emphasize the term “rag,” evoking images of a rag doll, i.e. limp, no backbone, vulnerable.

As we ponder along those lines, isn’t that what the Establishment (marketing, media, government, etc.) wants? Weak, vulnerable women who are mere shadows of what their real selves could be – strong, capable – dare we say it? – Powerful! If we continue to strive to lose weight and become clones of these runway waifs, what will be left? Sickly, frail women, weak and self-obsessed, easily manipulated and controlled. Women whose daughters and sons will simultaneously emulate them yet abhor them.

So who can we turn to for images of strength? Remember Wonder Woman, that “Amazon” superhero? But you say, that was simply a legend. Was there truly a race of Amazon women? There is archeological evidence that Xena and her sisters really did exist way back in the mists of time.

These women were strong – they could ride, farm, bear children, fight and kill to protect home and community. Historians have depicted them, based on the evidence, as wearing trousers, leather caps and one earring.

Amazon women would not have tolerated the likes of Kate Moss and the fashionistas. (I always knew Wonder Woman was real!)
